Bachelor of Physiotherapy

Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) is a four-and-a-half-year professional degree (4 years of academics + 6 months of compulsory clinical internship). It trains graduates to assess, diagnose, and treat movement disorders, musculoskeletal injuries, neurological conditions, sports injuries, and post-surgical rehabilitation through exercise therapy, electrotherapy, manual therapy, and movement re-education. After completion and registration with the relevant state physiotherapy council, graduates can practise as Registered Physiotherapists.

Why choose Bachelor of Physiotherapy?

  • BPT is a regulated professional health degree — registration with the relevant state council enables independent physiotherapy practice.
  • Demand has grown significantly with rising sports injury, lifestyle musculoskeletal issues, and elderly rehabilitation needs in 2026.
  • The curriculum builds genuine clinical capability — six months of mandatory full-time hospital internship across departments (orthopaedics, neurology, cardio, paediatrics).
  • Career paths are diverse — hospital physiotherapy, sports physiotherapy, geriatric care, paediatric rehabilitation, neuro-rehab, and independent practice.
  • MPT specialisations open up sports physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and academic / research careers.

BPT vs MBBS: Which Should You Choose?

BPT is a 4.5-year physiotherapy degree (including internship) focused on musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary, and sports rehabilitation. MBBS is the 5.5-year allopathic medical degree. Pick BPT for direct entry into rehabilitation practice; MBBS opens broader medical practice but is considerably more competitive (NEET-UG) and longer in total training time to specialist practice.

Subjects and learning areas

BPT syllabus is medical-foundation-heavy in early years and clinical-rehabilitation-focused in later years:

  • Year 1 — Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biomechanics, Kinesiology
  • Year 2 — Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Exercise Therapy, Electrotherapy
  • Year 3 — Orthopaedics, Neurology, Cardio-Respiratory Conditions, Sports Physiotherapy
  • Year 4 — Community Physiotherapy, Geriatric and Paediatric Physiotherapy, Manual Therapy
  • Internship — six months of rotational clinical postings (orthopaedics, neuro, cardio, paeds)
  • Clinical Documentation, Research Methodology, and Evidence-Based Practice

The internship rotations across hospital departments build real clinical decision-making — students see patients, design treatment plans, and execute under supervision.

Related courses: Allied health and rehabilitation aspirants can also explore B.Sc Nursing, BMLT, B.Sc Occupational Therapy, B.Sc Audiology and Speech Therapy, and BNYS as related healthcare pathways.

Career scope after Bachelor of Physiotherapy

BPT career paths span hospital physiotherapy departments, sports teams, rehabilitation centres, and independent clinics.

  • Junior Physiotherapist in hospital orthopaedic, neurology, and rehabilitation departments
  • Sports Physiotherapist with sports academies, fitness centres, and professional teams
  • Independent physiotherapy clinic practice after state council registration
  • Geriatric care physiotherapist at senior living centres and home-care services
  • Paediatric physiotherapist for developmental disorders and special needs schools
  • Corporate ergonomics and wellness consultant

Career income improves significantly with MPT specialisation (Sports / Neuro / Musculoskeletal) and 3-5 years of clinical experience. Independent practice often becomes viable after this experience window.

Career Growth Path

BPT graduates typically begin as physiotherapists at hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports academies, and wellness clinics. With MPT in a specialty (orthopaedics, neurology, sports, cardiopulmonary), they progress to senior consultant physiotherapist, sports team physio, and department-head roles. Independent home-care physiotherapy practice is an increasingly common long-term route.

Note: The salary range above is indicative and may change based on city, employer profile, candidate skill level, and prior internship exposure.

Higher study and future progression

  • MPT — postgraduate specialisation (Sports, Neurology, Musculoskeletal, Cardiopulmonary, Paediatrics, Geriatrics)
  • MPH (Public Health) for community physiotherapy and policy roles
  • MBA in Hospital Management for administrative pivots
  • Manual Therapy certifications, Mulligan, Maitland, McKenzie, Dry Needling
  • PhD in Physiotherapy / Rehabilitation Sciences for academic and research careers

Source note: Eligibility, course duration, and recognition norms can change. Confirm current rules from the official university brochure and the relevant regulator before paying any fees.

Verification note: Check the latest approval status from the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) and the relevant state physiotherapy council and the official university website before applying.

Who should choose this course?

  • 12th PCB students drawn to hands-on clinical rehabilitation careers
  • Aspirants for sports physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, and independent clinic practice
  • Future MPT specialists in sports, neuro, or musculoskeletal physiotherapy
  • Students interested in geriatric care, paediatric rehabilitation, and corporate wellness

Who Should Avoid This Course?

BPT may not suit students looking for prescription rights or surgical scope — physiotherapy is rehabilitation-focused. Compensation in early years is modest in many Indian markets, with stronger long-term outcomes for MPT-qualified specialists and independent practitioners.

Frequently asked questions

NEET-UG requirement for BPT varies by state and university — some require it, others do not. The trend in 2026 is toward NEET-UG inclusion at more universities. Always verify the current admission rule for the specific college.
BPT graduates can use 'Dr.' as a courtesy title in many states, with the practice scope clearly identified as physiotherapy — not allopathic medicine. Specific state and central regulations apply, and any use must comply with current physiotherapy council rules.
No. BPT requires hands-on practical training, anatomy lab work, electrotherapy practicals, and clinical internships — all of which require in-person training. Distance / online BPT is not approved by physiotherapy councils.
Entry-level salaries in 2026 vary by city and setting — corporate hospitals pay higher than smaller clinics, and metro-city salaries are typically higher than tier-2/3. Sports physiotherapy and corporate wellness roles tend to pay higher than general OPD physiotherapy. MPT specialists earn meaningfully more than general BPT graduates.
Not legally — BPT + state council registration is sufficient for independent practice. However, MPT specialisation significantly improves career outcomes, especially in sports, neurology, and corporate sectors. Most BPT graduates pursue MPT within 2-3 years.
No. BPT requires extensive supervised clinical training in physiotherapy procedures, electrotherapy, and patient handling that are physical and hands-on. Online or distance BPT is not recognised by the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) or state physiotherapy councils, and graduates from such modes typically cannot qualify for council registration.
